As Bob said, if you used a registry cleaner that most probably has
contributed to the general bad health of Windows. See this link for why

However, I would also like to add that the symptoms you describe generally
go along with some sort of malware infection. Simply using an antivirus
(which one?) and doing file maintenance is no solution to malware
infestation. I don't particularly care for Vista, but my Vista installation
is exactly as fast and fresh as it was when I first installed it. Gradual
degradation such as you are experiencing is not something that "just
happens" because you are using a certain operating system.
