Vista won't start up after it's 'Shutdown' ...but will if I 'Restart'??

Hi All,

Stange problem only just started occuring.

If I 'Shutdown' Vista (SP1) after I've finished my session it will not
start up again.

It just gets to the black screen with bullet going left to right and
stays there forever.

If I reste the PC and try again, no difference.

If I reset abd choose 'Last Known Good Configuration that worked' then
it boots up OK.

If I then do several 'Restart's' it boots up OK each time.

...However...if I choose 'Shutdown' again, it fails again next time I
switch on.
I then have to choose Last Known Good..etc etc..to get it to work
again.

Anyone any ideas what in the world is going on ?

Event logs don't seem to shwon anything..

Jim.

Have you recently installed any programs?

Which firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware or security suite is installed?
There are some that cause problems which don't always appear immediately.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.
Consider this: Whenever a new error condition appears on your computer, it
is almost certain that there was some change to the computer soon before the
problem began.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is
being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure of.

Possibly downloaded some AdAware 2007 updates and then ran my weekly
scan.
Could be that, perhaps I'll uninstall it and see what happens, can
always download it and re-install it again.
Problem has really only occured in the last day or so.

I think it was OK after the Windows Updates about mid week.

I put another 1GB RAM in my PC last week, golly what a difference now
I've got 2GB.
You can't really run Vista on 1GB RAM, take my word for it.

OK Folks,

Things have returned to normal....curiously after I completed my
weekly pass with Symantec Corp AntiVirus 10.2x.
I seem to recall that I cancelled out of a scan as I had to go out
somewhere a few weeks back.
This issue did start the very next time I booted up.
So perhaps the scan didn't cancel/quit properly and left something in
limbo.
And then completing a scan at a later date undid whatever happened ?

Who knows..

Jim.
