| | Transferring C:\Users\Fred\ to a new machine - AppData? Hi there, Fred's laptop has been run over by a runaway bus. Thankfully he was able to dig the hard-drive out of the pavement and recover all the data off it. Fred's insurance company have sent him a new laptop, with the same version of Vista preinstalled. If he copies the entire contents of C:\Users\Fred\ to the new machine - including the hidden AppData folder - will all Fred's settings be replicated? Obviously all his documents, photos & music will transfer fine to the new machine, but what I'm hoping is that his accounts (in Windows Live Mail) & the passwords for them will be instantly setup, also. I'm concerned that there may be some identities\{213ab-456cd-789ef} folders that will not be recognised on the new machine because those accounts have not been setup "the proper way" on that system. Can anyone advise me, please? Thanks in advance, Stroller. |

There are only certain apps that I want to keep the settings for this way, and copying the whole folder is not necessary. In the case of Windows Mail, you also need to copy across some registry keys, for all settings and rules, but I am not sure about Windows Live Mail. It's most probably the same. ss. |

| | RE: Transferring C:\Users\Fred\ to a new machine - AppData? Hook up the drive to a external source and use the Corrupted profile method to get the info over. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/811151 That should allow him to get all the data he wants from his profile back. Then just copy over the rest of the files from the Documents folder and pictures folder. Everything should then be just the way it was.
