| Guest | SP1 Causes Problems with Internet Connection Hi everyone, After installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 I lost my internet connection. I kept trying to open various websites in Internet Explorer and eventually I was able to download partial, sometimes even complete web pages, although IE wasn't displaying them, presumably because various resources on the page weren't downloaded yet (I used View Source in the empty browser window to see what it had downloaded up until that point and in most cases it was only half of a web page). Some sites began to work all of the time, such as Google.com, while other sites didn't work at all, like Microsoft.com. I persisted to keep trying to connect to various web sites, assuming that it was just a major coincidence that my network connection was failing at the same exact time that I installed SP1, but after several hours now I'm still having the same exact problem and some research has turned up that I'm certainly not the only person to experience internet connection issues due to having installed SP1. I've tried the following: 1. Browse to my Linksys Broadband Firewall Router configuration site (by entering the router I.P. address into IE) 2. Sometimes I could connect to the router in IE, although typically I couldn't. And once connected, anytime I clicked a link to view a different admin page I would get "Page cannot be displayed". Try again, and the page would download. 3. In a command window, ping various websites. Sometimes I would get a reply and sometimes I wouldn't. The problem seemed to occur intermittently, even when I tried the same website multiple times. (e.g., google.com, microsoft.com, et al.). 4. Release and renew my external I.P. address using the Linksys Status page. 5. Disable my Local Area Network connection and then re-enable it. (Note that it's not a wireless connection.) 6. Unplug both my Linksys and my cable modem, wait 15 to 20 seconds, and plug them back in. 7. Check that my Linksys has the latest firmware installed. 8. Open the LAN connection properties dialog and click the Diagnose button. Sometimes it wouldn't find anything wrong and other times it would. If it offered a suggestion to fix the problem (e.g., reset the adapter, tell me to unplug it, et al.), I would use it. 9. Open the Vista connection manager (the one with the simple diagram of my network topology) and see that the it appeared to be connected. Keeping it open and browsing to some sites, I noticed that all of a sudden the connection would be broken. This occurred randomly and often enough that I could watch it happen in the diagram over the course of a few seconds. 10. Open device manager and expand Network adapters. My adapter is listed (Intel PRO/1000 MT Server Connection) and appears to be functioning properly. Clicking Update Driver... results in a message stating that I have the latest driver. All of this occurred sometime this afternoon, immediately after I had installed SP1 and rebooted. However, after about an hour of frustration and trying out the stuff that I mentioned, repeatedly, everything just started working again on its own - no connection problems at all. All websites seemed to download fine and the connection appeared to be stable. Unfortunately, it didn't last. Now, after not using my computer for a few hours, I woke it up and the problems are back again. I haven't tried rebooting yet but I will after I send this message. Any suggestions? Thanks, Dave P.S., As I'm writing this, Windows Mail has even reported that it lost the NNTP connection :| |

| Guest | Re: SP1 Causes Problems with Internet Connection Hi, I rebooted and waited until now to try again. I'm still experiencing the same behavior. For example, I can access my iGoogle home page and MSN.com (although most of the content on the page is broken or missing) but I cannot access CodePlex.com or Microsoft.com at all. Vista currently reports no problems with my internet connection. Does anybody have any idea of how to solve this, aside from rolling back SP1? | Guest | Re: SP1 Causes Problems with Internet Connection Hi everyone, Using Google Groups I see that some people have responded to this thread, but for some reason Windows Mail is only showing my original post (and not even my first reply post). I assume this is related to my connection issue. In response to the comment about IE add-ons, I don't think IE in particular is at fault. For example, here's what happened when I pinged CodePlex and Google in a command window: Quote: >ping codeplex.com Request timed out. Ping statistics for 207.46.208.126: Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 0, Lost = 1 (100% loss), Control-C ^C Quote: >ping google.com Reply from 72.14.207.99: bytes=32 time=39ms TTL=242 Reply from 72.14.207.99: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=242 Reply from 72.14.207.99: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=242 Reply from 72.14.207.99: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=242 Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 39ms, Maximum = 41ms, Average = 40ms So the issue is definitely on a lower level. It certainly seems like an ISP issue but what a coincidence that it started happening only after I installed SP1 and rebooted, which took only about one hour total, and the problem still hasn't been resolved yet. I just tried disabling Windows Firewall and resetting the network connection but it didn't have any effect. | Guest | Re: SP1 Causes Problems with Internet Connection I'm finding that a lot of MS newsgroup messages don't get downloaded by Windows Mail. Happened even before SP1. Rather than updating it did you try removing and re-installing your ethernet driver? One of the problems preventing people from getting SP1 via MS Update was related to problematic drivers on their computers. | Guest | Re: SP1 Causes Problems with Internet Connection Hi, The Windows Mail problem turned out not to be a connection problem - I didn't realize that only my original post was being watched automatically; I guess it's a feature that auto-watches the first sent message in a thread, but not the entire thread? Anyway, I didn't try reinstalling the driver, but that's a good idea. I just went to Device Manager and uninstalled my network adapter. Then I chose to Scan for hardware changes and Vista found and installed the same adapter again immediately. After restarting, I'm still having the exact same connection problem. I'm already intimately familiar with the SP1 driver issues: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...af33c?lnk=igtc Just to be clear, I'm quite sure this is a SP1 issue since I have two computers connected to the same router and cable modem. My other computer is running XP and I have no trouble at all connecting to any website. Before SP1, I had no problems connecting with my Vista box either. | Guest | Re: SP1 Causes Problems with Internet Connection Hi, I deleted all of my temporary internet files, cookies and passwords. Now I can finally access Microsoft.com, CodePlex.com and my personal website. So apparently it was the temporary files all along that was causing my internet connectivity issues. (Thanks to my ISP for forcing me to try deleting them even though I assumed that it wouldn't have any effect ![]() However, I cannot log in and view any pages in CodePlex.com or my personal website. When I try, pages take several minutes to load or, in most cases, never load at all. Deleting the temporary stuff again and restarting IE7 allows me to view these websites, but not while I'm logged in. I was able to successfully log in to iGoogle and MSDN forums though, but it took a few _minutes_ in each before the page loaded after I submitted my credentials. I tried with Firefox and Opera and the results were the same, although Opera didn't seem to be as affected - it still takes over a minute, at least, just to see any web page while I'm logged in to the site, but CodePlex does work eventually if I'm patient. The amount of delay is certainly not reasonable though, so just using Opera instead of IE7 is not an acceptable solution. As a test, I booted up a Virtual PC that is running XP. I then browsed to my personal website and logged in using IE6. I was returned to the main page immediately and I could access all of my protected content. Therefore, it's not my internet connection and it's not my personal website that is causing the log in problem. Then, back on the Vista computer with SP1 (which is hosting the VPC), I tried the same thing and I still couldn't even log in. After several attempts I was able to log in, but I still can't access any other pages on my website while I'm logged in. As a matter of fact, I can't even access any webpage to log out. Clearing my cookies allows me to access the pages on my website again, but obviously I'm no longer logged in - which is a major problem. After several more failed attempts in Vista I tried again on the VPC and it still worked fine - I was able to log in and view other pages on my website, just like before. I don't know what else to attribute this problem to other than SP1. IE7 was working fine an hour before the installation completed. Is it possible to uninstall SP1? I'd like to make sure that it is in fact causing the problem and then, I guess, wait for SP2 :| Thanks, Dave "Dave Sexton" <dave@xxxxxx_remove_this_sexton.com> wrote in message news:%23YIFQ38nIHA.548@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi, > > The Windows Mail problem turned out not to be a connection problem - I > didn't realize that only my original post was being watched automatically; > I guess it's a feature that auto-watches the first sent message in a > thread, but not the entire thread? > > Anyway, I didn't try reinstalling the driver, but that's a good idea. > > I just went to Device Manager and uninstalled my network adapter.
