| | How To Change Icon Associated With Drive I recently added a flash drive to my system in order to take advantage of the Vista's ReadyBoost capability (which works fine). However, adding this drive has thrown off my icons and I don't know how to correct it. That is, drive I: used to be associated with Memory Stick, J: with Compact Flash and K: with Smart Media. Now everything is shifted by one, i.e., I: shows Compact Flash and J: as Smart Media. H: shows up as Memory stick whenever I add an external drive. The ReadyBoost flash drive shows as L:. I purchased Microangelo On Display in hopes of easily correcting this issue, but it doesn't seem to see the Memory Stick, Compact Flash or Smart Media icons. (Or, I don't know where to find them.) Anyone know how I can correct this? Thanks in advance. |

| | Re: How To Change Icon Associated With Drive You have a special consideration for your USB connected flash drive. You want it to retain it's drive letter. That's fine, but you are making it use 'write caching' (found on the Policies tab of its properties pages.) This in turn requires that you use, without fail, the "Safely Remove Hardware" option, available when you do that. (you 'eject' the drive, rather than 'pull' it) Before you establish ReadyBoost, you can go to Disk Management (run diskmgmt.msc) and change drive letter assignments by rightclicking their icon. You may find it useful to know that a flash drive becomes read only after about 100,000 writes. Not that that is too bad. I expect to get about 3 years out of my flash drive that way, and consider it about like the cost of CD-RW. -- Was this helpful? Then click the Ratings button. | | Re: How To Change Icon Associated With Drive Go to Computer, Control Panel/Administrative Functions/Computer Management. Select Storage, then Disk Management. From there you can force a new drive letter to your memory stick. Pick one late in the alphabet and your other drives correct themselves next time you login.
