| Guest | rename file I want to rename <myname>/Desktop/Linux_Mag_Bugs.eml to <myname>/Desktop/Bugs.txt A right click on the icon does not give me the opportunity to change the suffix. Question: How can you change a file suffix? Charles |

| Member | Re: rename file In order to change the suffix (extension) of a file, you need to show it first by going to: 1. Explorer (My Computer) 2. Click on Tools 3. Then Folder Options 4. In the View tab uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types Then try to go to rename your file again. Hope this will help! |

My HP dv6000 laptop is running Vista Premium. Lukan suggested arrow keys. No combination of arrow key and control key and shift key and alt key accesses the suffix. Charles |

In any case, explorer is not listed under start. explorer *is* almost listed under Start>Accessories>Windows Explorer but this version has no *tools*. I know where control panel is located Start > Control Panel Can I get there from Control Panel? There are icons on my screen (desktop). The icons have titles listed below each of them. The titles are file names *without* suffixes. --cc |

It has taking me at least two hours to find this, but the arrow key only works if the extension is visible. --cc |

Somebody else on this forum gave me the clue. Windows Key + e => Explorer Window While in the Explorer Window, the ALT key reveals (and hides) another menu bar... File Edit View Tools Help At this point, your instructions are good. Thank you, --cc |

| Member | Re: rename file Charles, You're on the right track. If you could find the Folder Options (It's a good idea to find it in the Control Panel under Settings of Start Menu ), then indeed you will see the View tab. Under the Advanced settings, you will see the checkbox labeled "Hide extensions for known file types" (without the quotation marks). Uncheck that checkbox --> Apply --> Ok. After that you'll see under the icon there appears the filename and the extension.Note: In Windows, suffix means extension. You should try to find the term extension rather than the suffix one. In addition, Menu Bar is invisible because you haven't shown it yet. You can do the following: 1. Have a glance at the very top-left corner of Windows Explorer (Windows Key + e) screen, you will be able to see a drop-down list labeled Organize. Click on that. 2. Select Layout --> Menu Bar |
