need location of the defender forums/groups

Could one of the MVPs send the server and groupnames for
the defender application.

I would really like to install my own anti-spyware
application to replace defender, but security center does
not have the option available to switch monitoring to the
other application, Ad-aware pro, at this time.

Click up Help and Support
type in defender
item #10 should be "turn defender on and off"
clear the check if you want to use something else

You can run both at once. As a matter of fact, you *should* run more
than one anti-spyware program. Using one anti-spyware program is *not*
good enough. Eric Howes, who has done extensive testing on
Anti-Spyware products, states:

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the
best-performing anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one
quarter of the "critical" files and Registry entries" See

Lester,

You can turn off Windows Defender within Windows Defender itself. Open
Windows Defender and select Tools and then Software Explorer. Once in
Software Explorer make sure Startup Programs is selected in "Category".
Click on the "Show for all users" button at the bottom and then click on
Continue when the elevation prompt appears. Click on Windows Defender listed
under Microsoft Corporation on the left side of the window and then click on
the "Disable" button on the bottom right of the window.
This will turn off Windows Defender and prevent it from starting at
bootup. If you decide you want to run it occasionally later all you have to
do is go to Start, All Programs and select it. It will then run for you.
Once it is done running it will not start at bootup or run again unless you
decide to start it yourself.

Keep WinDef, it's a relatively good product and gives you 'real-time'
protection.
Interesting reading:

"...Windows Defender did excel in behavior-based protection, which detects
changes to key areas of the system without having to know anything about
the actual threat."

The effectiveness of an individual A-S scanners can be wide-ranging and
oftentimes a collection of scanners is best. There isn't one software that
cleans and immunizes you against everything. That's why you need multiple
products to do the job i.e. overlap their coverage - one may catch what
another may miss, (grab'em all).

Actually the Ad-Aware pro has a realtime engine. Realtime
protection is only available in their paid products (plus,
pro, etc. Their realtime does detect the key changes as wel
as having the hosts file editor/viewer, and a service viewer.
