| | Vista - Things that appear |

| | Things that appear I'm sure some of the things that go wrong are due to the fact that my finger will sometimes twitch and depress the mouse button where it shouldn't put something into play on the bad side, but even so, I'd like to know how to fix the problems no matter thie origins. (I'm much better on that since I found the Steadymouse program.) Not sure what you call the panels that ariced when you push the logo key between the left Ctrl & Alt, but things have disappeared over the past several months. The first I noticed was that the DOCUMENTS sign no longer took me to my documents folder, as it used to do. The other things have been happening (or not happening) in the past few weeks. I don't recall everything that used to be on the right side panel, but here's what's left: DOCUMENTS MUSIC GAMES COMPUTER CONNECT TO CONTROL PANEL DEFAULT PROGRAMS HELP and SUPPORT RUN... As I recall it, clicking on GAMES would bring up the list on the right side of the panel, but now it brings up a new Window with the links listed. My questions: how do I get DOCUMENTS to work - what used to be there, and how do I prevent any more losses? My usual deeply meant thanks in advance. |

Right-click on the taskbar, choose 'properties' and the Start Menu tab. When you click the 'Customize' button, you can choose the items for the right-side list and whether they show a list or open a folder, etc. |

Now, let's find the Documents folder - Click Start, at the 'Start Search...' text box, key %USERPROFILE% - this should open file Explorer at your user location. Open the Document folder. You should now be at a location such as, 'youruserid - Quote: > Documents' highlight the address bar to reveal the actual folder \Documents'. Copy that location down, you will need it in a moment. Now, go to Start and right click 'Documents', select 'Properties.' On the Location tab, paste or key the path to Documents from above. Good luck, -solon fox |

Here is my 2 cents about the other questions. 1. The panel you mentioned is the Start Menu. It's the same one when you click the circular logo at the extreme bottom left. 2. Your recollection has failed you. If you look to the Left of the panel, click All Programs, scroll down and find the Games, and if you click on it, you'll see the list. If you click on Games on the Right panel, it'll bring you to a new window, as you mentioned. That's the way it should be. |

| | Re: Things that appear Thanks to you and the others who chimed in. I'm still working on the 'documents' issue, but there's one other thing still hanging. (It is just a minor annoyance that I can live with, but still,,,, This jogged my memory, and yes, I had made adjustments to the list of what is on that part of the start menu, but the GAMES and the DOCUMENTS problems are more recent than that. It is GAMES than still nags, because it is now and has always been marked as Display as link, not Display as menu, but it insists on displaying the menu. I have a vague recollection that I might have gotten rid of some games there that I'd never use . . . I think HP included some of their games as part of the deal when I bought this computer. Could killing games make it not want to give links? Again thanks, and I won't be too disappointed if I haveto see the Games menu. | Vista Ultimate x86-32 SP1 dual boot with Windows XP SP3 | Re: Things that appear Hi Myron! You seem to be having a real problem here. I highly suggest you use system file checker [sfc] to be sure that no windows files are corrupt. To use sfc, open the run dialog by holding the Windows Key and pressing r key <Win+r>. Then, insert your Windows Vista Disk in your DVD drive. Make sure that you use the same drive from which you installed just to avoid problems. Cancel the Auto play which comes up. Now, in the Run dialog, type sfc /scannow and let the process complete. Be warned that it will take some time depending on the speed of ur computer and other factors. Reboot and then see whether u r getting the properties displayed correctly. |

In case you are not sure which one I meant, here is the screenshot of the instructions : - ![]() When you are at the CUSTOMIZE START MENU window, you'll see Documents. Make sure either " Display as link " or " Display as a menu " is clicked. Scroll further down, you'll find Games , again choose the option you want and click. That should take care of both of the problems. Let me know if problems solved. Thank you. |
