Update for showing correct RAM

Hullo.
I am using Vista Ultimate and my laptop has 1GB RAM. Though Vista only shows
it to be 895MB. I learnt that Microsoft has introduced an Update which shows
correct amount of RAM after it is installed. Actually, I dont have unlimitd
access to Internet so, cant download Service Pack 1.
Can anybody tell me what update number does this update have so that I can
get this problem fixed.
Thanks

Re: Update for showing correct RAM

Do you by any chance have an integrated graphic card on your machine (with
around 128MB RAM)? Integrated cards use part of the system memory so, as a
rough calculation, your system is registering 128MB RAM less than your 1GB
which is correct if you have an integrated card.

Re: Update for showing correct RAM

But one of my friends exactly had the same case. After installation of SP1,
he told me this problem was solved. Infact, we are using same model of Laptop.

There is nothing to fix. Note the following:

1. You have 1GB of RAM, but instead of having a separate video card,
you have video support on the motherboard. That video support uses
128MB of your 1GB of RAM, leaving you with 896MB for Windows.

2. The Microsoft update you are thinking of is part of SP1, and not
available separately, as far as I know. It deals only with the
situation where someone specially has 4GB of RAM, and Windows reports
only around 3.1-3.5GB. That 3.1-3.5GB report is because some of the
4GB address space is used for hardware devices, and is not available
for RAM to map to. The result is that most of that last GB of RAM goes
unused.

3. In computers with 4GB of RAM and Vista SP1, the report has been
changed to say you have 4GB. In my view, that's a very poor change,
because it misleads people to think that they now have the use of all
4GB. In fact they do not. Only the report has been changed and the
amount of usable RAM remains identical.

4. Your 896MB of RAM is very low for good performance with Vista. If
you would add another 1GB, you would very likely see a substantial
performance improvement.

5. It has nothing to do with the amount of RAM you have or how it's
reported, but you should get SP1 as soon as possible. If you are
unable to download it yourself, ask a friend to download it and burn
it to a CD for you.

Re: Update for showing correct RAM

Hullo Baby.
you see only 895 MB because the rest is used by your Video Card which is most probably
some kind of ATI ****! Go to the nearest PC dealer and get another 1 GB RAM.
Your Vista may perform much better afterwards. No update can multiply your RAM,
ony YOU yourself!
