Free Anti-Virus?

Could someone please recommend a free Anti-Virus program that is compatible
with Vista AND does not insert somekind of advertising tag in outgoing mail
or leave some other kind of footprint? Thanks

Re: Free Anti-Virus?

For maximum protection, consider installing
a comprehensive anti-virus/security program, such as
Windows OneCare. You can try it FREE for 90 days.

There are many good free AV applications available, and almost everyone has
his favorite. Most of the users are emotionally attached to their AV
application and will have excellent reasons for not recommending any other
brand.
The most important thing here is that all of the available choices listed
here are better in some respects than in others, and which choice is better
for *you* depends on what you do, how you work, and which features you use.
The way you use your PC is different from others.
Have a look at this:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
and be guided accordingly.
Good info can be obtained here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20
and here:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/

If the above is too deluging consider this:-
Real-time AV applications - for viral malware.
Do not utilize more than one (1) real-time anti-virus scanning engine!
Disable the e-mail scanning function during installation (Custom
Installation on some AV apps.) as it provides no additional protection.

You may wish to consider removing the 'AntiVir Nagscreen'

or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
It includes ANTI-SPYWARE protection, certified by the West Coast Labs

GMER technology.

(Choose Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.)
or
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

(Choose custom install and untick the email scanner plugin.)

and (optional but *very* advisable)

On-demand AV application.
(add it to your arsenal and use it as a "second opinion" av scanner).

Re: Free Anti-Virus?

I've been using Avast for years for Win98, XP and now Vista. Never had a
problem with it nor have I had any viruses (that I knew of at least).

Re: Free Anti-Virus?

Avast. Choose custom when you run the installer and uncheck scan email.

Re: Free Anti-Virus?

I used Avast for several years. Once I tried Windows OneCare
and noticed a vast improvement in overall system performance,
and absolutely no malware infections, I was sold in the high
quality of the product.

and you can turn off AVG's "certification' which it adds to email
without turning off it's scanning of email.

Re: Free Anti-Virus?

Agreed! I like AVG and/or SpyBot S&R with TeaTimer. You can get free trials of F-secure (VERY good, but expensive, > $90 USD) and some other ones but you usually only have 14 or 30 days. You can buy relatively inexpensive 1 year subscription to most popular suites on either Amazon or VioSoftware, full or OEM versions. Just with Vista, stay away from Norton until the come out with a more compatible version (2008 SS isn't it!). If you want to get away from all the WinMail conflict bugs, I also recommend using FREE Windows Live Mail app from MSN. Google it. Does it all and more. Companion product to their free IM/Chat/File/Video/Game app Windows Live Messenger. Also very nice. I video chatted with a 8 year old in central FL on WLM tonight for several hours and played Backgammon, all for FREE. And, Yes, she kicked my butt big time. Never play a computer based game with an 8 year old. Us old fart will lose every time!
