Network and Volume icons gone missing from System Tray

Why? I can't get them back either by checking them in the Start Menu
Properties as they are both grayed-out or by rebooting. I still have
network & internet access and sound. Vista Ultimate SP1 x86.

Hello Qu0ll,
That happened to me 3 days ago. Don't fish around . Do a system restore at the date before you lost those 2 items. That's what I did.

You might want to check this one out. After I got my network and volume icons back,
someone claimed that he had the same problem and he solved it by :
Control Panel>Classic View>Taskbar and Start Menu>Notification Area tab> the 2 boxes are blank but NOT greyed out. He just checked them and that's it. Want to confirm his claim?

Re: Network and Volume icons gone missing from System Tray

Having similar trouble guys, Taskbar and Sart Menu Properties > Notification Area only allow me to select Clock, the other 3 options Volume, Network and Power are greyed out. As this is on my laptop and I use it out and about quite a bit, its bloody frustrating to say the least. Tried everything suggested so far and nada, getting real annoyed by this. Anybody any ideas?

Hi Warbird,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Since you tried the other methods above with no success, then it sound like this is more your problem described in this tutorial. Select to show all System icons.

Notification Area - Hide All System Icons

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Did you also try switching from Vista (Default) style to Classic Style
and back? I had the same problem, and it got fixed by this rather
seemingly weird solution! That's VISTA for you (& us)!!
