Vista - network discovery doesn't work after virus/trojan

So I got a virus or trojan recently and was able to remove it all (as far as
I can tell). However it disabled everything in my security center, deleted
my restore points, disabled some services, and messed up my networking.
Now, when I open the network window, my system doesn't find any networked
computers automatically using network discovery. If try to connect to a
networked pc by typing \\laptop, for example, I get the "windows cannot
access ..." message. BUT, if I type in its IP address (192.168....) it
works. The same is true when trying to connect to the computer which had
the virus from another networked computer.

All my network settings are the same before the virus, as far as I can tell.
I've tried turning network disc. off and back on, reloading "client for MS
networks," checking all services related to networking & network disc I
could think of., but no luck. I want to avoid reformatting at all costs,
and don't think it would be worth the time. Any ideas? thanks

Hi Curran,

I have to disagree about reformatting given the information you have
supplied. No telling what unforeseen problems this Virus/Trojan has change.
Not just perhaps files, but possible many Registry changes that you will
never be able to find and fix. I think it would be wise to backup all your
user files while you can and format and start fresh.

Do you know the name of the Virus/Trojan?
Sometimes if your lucky a detail description of what they change is
available and it "may" be possible to correct it, but I still have may
doubt's when it comes to Network settings.
