Vista - HOW LONG?! Copying files.

HOW LONG?! Copying files.

I just migrated from Windows XP Pro to Vista Ultimate (64bit). So far
things have run *fairly* smoothly, but I am astonished at the length of time
it is taking for me to copy files.

For instance I want to copy 1/2 dozen folders from my "D" partition to my
"C" partition (drag & drop using Windows Explorer - both partitions are
NTFS, and I get the same result copying files on the same partition too).
These files existed on my previous XP install, and when I copied them from D
to C on XP it took around 2 minutes or so. Now the exact same files are
taking upwards of 25+ minutes to copy in Vista!

Is there some reason why Vista is acting like a decrepit 90 year old? :-)

Mike.

Supposedly, SP1 has helped. You couldn't prove it by me.

AFAIK this has been fixed in Service Pack 1.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

Nope. I have SP1 and it's not working

Back to XP I suppose. There's no way I can put up with such slow transfers.
I do a lot of video editing and regularly move very large files. This bug
would probably add 2 hours to my working day!

It's incredible that a new, 64bit operating system is so bug ridden and
slow. Even on my 4 gig RAM, RAID, quad core CPU Vista runs like a dog!

Mike,

Before you go back to XP,
maybe you could try the freeware TeraCopy:
http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php
For me it's a working solution.

Re: HOW LONG?! Copying files.

SP1 has decreased the time it takes to copy files but, I'm sorry to say, it
still isn't as fast as XP on file copying scenario's. To be honest I
attempted to copy 2.75GB data from my hard drive to a DVD yesterday. Now
this is simply standard data, no video. All I wanted was it backed up to a
DVD. Using Vista I copied the file and then pasted it to the DVD. Time to
copy the whole thing - well it started at 3hrs 15 minutes, then rose to 5hrs
and 20 minutes; it finally rested at 1day 12hrs 19minutes. After 2 hours of
copying the progress bar hadn't even moved. In the end I cancelled the
operation and decided to copy using Deep Burner. Total copy time? 4
minutes - amasing!

Now that I the down side of things. The upside I that copying the same
volume of data from my C: drive to my removable G: drive took exactly 8
minutes.

Even with SP1 installed I believe there is still some bugs in the copy
procedure but I'm not sure whether this 'bug' as I will call it is specific
to all machines or simply specific machine/drives etc.

Do you think this DRM that Vista has is anything to do with slow copying ?

Re: HOW LONG?! Copying files.

FWIW, I did a test...
copied 6 video files (30.0 GB) from D: to C: in 7 minutes, 15 seconds
both drives are internal SATA

it's terribly slow,
when you copy to a network drive,
and you are on a gigabyte network.

i read somewhere,
that they had to choose between video performance and network performance,
and that they choosed the first.

you are lucky, some have reported vista needing thousands of years to copy
files.

Im not kidding...

see some screenshots

http://www.wisertechnologies.com/blo...vista_copy.jpg

44.5 thousand days.. that is 125 YEARS! lol

http://regmedia.co.uk/2007/12/20/long-goodbye2.jpg

36.8 thousand days... lol

Just google and press images on the google page and you will see hundreds of
such images showing how STUPID

vista is

Oh yes.. vista is the most horrible OS ever made!
