| | Noisy Vista I have a new Gateway system that I bought a few months ago and lately it seems that the hard drive is very noisy. When you go from one web page to another it sounds like a car revving up it's engine. I have some files to encode and when I do that, it just sounds like it's full speed ahead. Maybe its nothing but it scares me a little. Is this normal? And im assuming it's the hard drive, I guess im not really sure. Like a car revving up it's engine is the best way I can describe it. Thanks. Tom |

| Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 | Re: Noisy Vista Generally that sound is associated with a disc in the optical drive. If you have one in a drive pull it out and see how it sounds then. Another noise maker is the power supply fan which is located around back of your computer. |

| | Re: Noisy Vista MIGHT BE A hdd ISSUE, BUT IT COULD ALSO BE THE FAN. Some newer systems have the fan speed controlled by a thermostat. The more you use the CPU (loading a new page), the warmer it gets and the fan kicks in. I would blow out the interior of the case, power supply and heat sinks with compressed air. If the noise persists, call the manufacturer, if the HDD is going bad, it should be replaced. I use real player a lot because it makes it easy to download some videos off websites. When Im through with the downloading or close realplayer though, the realplay.exe seems to stay running. Close that down and the noise stops. Thanks again. Thomas |
