Vista - Noisy Vista

I have a new Gateway system that I bought a few months ago and lately it
seems that the hard drive is very noisy. When you go from one web page to
another it sounds like a car revving up it's engine. I have some files to
encode and when I do that, it just sounds like it's full speed ahead. Maybe
its nothing but it scares me a little. Is this normal? And im assuming
it's the hard drive, I guess im not really sure. Like a car revving up it's
engine is the best way I can describe it. Thanks.

Restart the computer in safe mode,
A. Press F8 before Windows Vista starts.
B. Press ENTER to start Windows Vista in safe mode.

Suggest cleaning up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders, and
included all offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies , do a
Disk CleanUp.

Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in
the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

Empty user and system "temp" folders.
Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line

%systemdrive%\temp

%systemdrive%\%windir%\temp

%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Perhaps some HD maintenance, try running the "chkdsk /r" command at the
command prompt

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line
chkdsk /r

Exit Safe Mode (Rebººt)

C. When CHKDSK is finished, restart the computer.

Restart the computer in normal mode.

Generally that sound is associated with a disc in the optical drive. If you have one in a drive pull it out and see how it sounds then.
Another noise maker is the power supply fan which is located around back of your computer.

MIGHT BE A hdd ISSUE, BUT IT COULD ALSO BE THE FAN.
Some newer systems have the fan speed controlled by a thermostat.
The more you use the CPU (loading a new page), the warmer it gets and the
fan kicks in.
I would blow out the interior of the case, power supply and heat sinks with
compressed air.
If the noise persists, call the manufacturer, if the HDD is going bad, it
should be replaced.

opened up task manager and I noticed that realplay.exe was using up a lot of
memory and 50 perecent of the cpu. I ended that process and the noise
stopped. I use real player a lot because it makes it easy to download some
videos off websites. When Im through with the downloading or close
realplayer though, the realplay.exe seems to stay running. Close that down
and the noise stops.
