news groups mail

I use Outlook for my e-mails. Unfortunately, Outlook does not have access to
news groups. When I go to Mail to get access to the news groups, Mail
downloads all of the e-mails since I last used Mail. It may have been weeks
since my last use of Mail so the list is rather long (hundreds). Is there
any way to stop downloading all of these e-mails that I have already dealt
with on Outlook? Why does Outlook not provide access to Newsgroups?
Thanks,

Len Urban

Re: news groups mail

Don't ask why Outlook doesn't do Newsgroups...

Its never been able to do it, and MSFT doesn't seem to want it ever to do
that..

they have made live mail desktop that is actually a substitute for windows
mail
and does newsgroups.

Most email servers do not send the same emails if you check the emails with
2 programs...

However you may have a setting in outlook wrong.

Question: when you check your email in windows mail, do you also get the
same email later on outlook?

Re: news groups mail

Hi Len,

In Mail, click tools/accounts and select your mail account. Click
properties, then on the general tab uncheck the box to include this account
when synchronizing. Repeat for other mail accounts as desired.

Outlook was never designed for use as a newsreader, and Microsoft will
likely not change this. They provide the function with the basic mail
program included with Windows, and that's generally sufficient.

Re: news groups mail

( this is outlook 2007)

tools>account settings>(select your account) and press CHANGE>on that window
press the MORE SETTINGS BUTTON>
go to the advanced TAB and see the last 3 checkmark boxes, on of them says
LEAVE MESSAGE ON SERVER,

the window with the checkmark is similar to this (I just found this image on
the internet to show you what the window is like)
http://www.csus.edu/saclink/email/im...ed_setting.gif

that means its left on the server, so when you open windows mail it
downloads again

what kind of email account do you have?

most hardcore newsgroup users would laugh at this, since they use very
complex newsreaders with many options
like Forte

Personally I never cared about many options, I just wanted something simple
and easy to use.. that's why
its outlook express, live mail, windows mail, thunderbird for me...

I have used all existing newsreaders for windows and linux though...

Re: news groups mail

You can go to Tools>Options>General then uncheck "Send and receive messages
at startup". That way Windows Mail only downloads emails when you tell it
to.

Re: news groups mail

If the timer is set, it will still download email automatically after the
initial time period passes. You need to disable the account from
synchronizing.

There is an add-in available from MAPIlab that will let you read newsgroups
in Outlook. Personally, I find it's interface and functionality to be
inferior to that of Windows Mail, but the OP may want to give it a try.

Re: news groups mail

Yeah, but why did the accounts get set up in WinMail to begin with? If he
deletes the mail accounts, then it won't download the mail.

There are several switches to start Winmail in news mode only:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /newsonly
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /outnews
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /news

I believe the button on the Outlook toolbar for "read news" starts WinMail
in this fashion, but I'm not sure as I don't have Outlook installed.
