When I transfer a file to my external hard drive the file only moves at
10-12MB/s I thought they were supposed to have higher transfer speeds than
that/ 13GB file takes 30 minutes? My internet speed is almost as fast.

What can I do to improve it?

No hub dirrectly to the port on the MB. I think it's the speed of the drive
I have as I've read more about it.
