Vista - windows vista update installation failed

I have windows vista home premium...Security Update for Microsoft. NET
Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack (KB929729)will download, but not
install....Rec'ved error codes 80246005 and 643.........help!! It downloads
over and over for months.....any connection to AOL or Trend Pc-Cillin?...I'm
technically challenged, so please reply in step by step solution, if you have
one...thanks.

According to Microsoft, there is a prerequisite to installing KB929729. You have to install MS Windows Installer 3.1 first. Here is the entrie article, look under More Information, prerequisites.

I don't even know what a service pack is.....But i see in my Windows Update
History that Windows has automatically downloaded and installed updates for
..NET Framework 3.0....would this mean I could ignore downloading the Version
1.1 update and function properly?
