That's an absurd answer!
Chances are a system restore will un-do the damage.
It's certainly the first thing to try

Its a MVP ... not really sure what they "know".
Not much, from what I see.
They can copy and paste...must be that online course they took.
Or they use Video Doctor...or PC doctor...whatever that rediculous course on
TV is.
They are funny...give them that.

If you bothered to read the OP's post, he already tried
System Restore and it failed. Have you a solution?

I realize I screwed up, but since I already restored partial function to
my computer I think there's something I can do. At the very least I need
to gain access to my hardware management, which is all blank even though
all the data still exists, to activate my CD drives so I can save some
of my data. Someone out there must be able to help...

OK, so what do you suggest that the OP does next?

Maybe place his drive in another machine and get his important files off of
it?

Then maybe run sfc /scannow being as system restore is crippled?

Trouble is that SFC can only do so much, do you agree?

Now what? Use his complete system backup?

Maybe you should ask if the OP has one?

Doubtful though, because the OP would have tried that already..

I started the ball rolling.. now you finish by giving the OP an idea of what
he can do. Carey has already suggested something, most likely what the OP
will have to do.

It is a broken piece of crap.
With my backups, and installation disk...I would be already up and
running....as maybe the OP already is.
But...I know how to use a PC....And MVP cut and paste answers are beyomd
actual usage.
SFC.... what a useless three letter word

Re: I broke my registry, I think...

You didn't start the ball rolling...when has sfc fixed any system?
Backups are the way to go....reinstallation is way faster than asking the
idiots here anyting.
Wouldn't you agree?

SFC doesn't fix a lot of things, and when used to fix problems beyond its
range, it seems not to work at all. no real fault of SFC, eh..

Your backups and installation media will be of less use to the OP than SFC,
so what do you suggest the OP does?

I suggest if his PC is unusable to reinstall....he may lose some pron email
and pics...but anyone creating real work already knows how to do backups.
Unless he is 12, then you can probably help him.

Re: I broke my registry, I think...

I mean, come on.... only the newest PC users don't do backups of data....its
as old an idea as the PC itself.
The morons whom ruin their PC's with idiotic toolbars and free programs
don't stand to lose any real data.
The might lose pics of their girlfriend, or mommy, but if they weren't smart
enough to copy that stuff to cd/usb stick....well, they learned a hard
lesson.
One that maybe they will take to heart.
My PC runs fine...yet sfc / scannow won't even complete.
If it doesn't work on a good computer...it doesn't work on any.
