Please bring the task pane back

Am I missing something, or has MS ditched the explorer task pane (the area
on the left of the window with commands like "copy this file" and "move this
file") in Vista? Does someone know of a way to get it back?

Re: Please bring the task pane back

You can get them back if you turn on Classic Menus, Folder Options (Control
Panel) > View (tab) > Advanced Settings "Always Show Classic menus". You can
then choose to move the file or copy to a location from the Edit menu.

Re: Please bring the task pane back

You can also find those tasks in the "Organize" drop-down in the task ribbon.

Re: Please bring the task pane back

I didn't know it was called ribbon? Thanks for that info, I wasn't Vista, so
I couldn't confirm in the suggestion.

Re: Please bring the task pane back

I appropriated the "ribbon" term from a similar feature common across the
Office 2007 products. The official term is "toolbar" (at least according to
the current help on the topic).

I remember in earlier builds it was known as menu bar.

Re: Please bring the task pane back

Sorry, but the command in the "Organize" menu is "copy", not "copy to..." I
want one click to bring up a dialog box to select where to copy the file.
It looks like MS is trying to make things easier with Vista, but this is
definitely a step backward.

Re: Please bring the task pane back

The "what do you want to do" - task feature in the left sided window in
Explorer from Windows XP is gone.

Now you have on the top of each Explorer Window, in the menu-bar some tasks
that change dependig on what files are shown in Explorer. For Images and
Music you see "burn to disk" "play all" "start Slideshow" and so on..

"copy to folder " & "move to folder" are gone as far as I can see.

"this is by design" will be the answer from MSFT.

Also "by design" - no moveable quicklaunchbar from the taskbar, if unlocked.

Re: Please bring the task pane back

I guess I was right, you do have to turn on Classic menus to move files or
copy to locations using the Edit drop down menu. That Task ribbon does not
exist as David suggest, you can also turn on classic menus by clicking
Organize > Layout > Menu Bar.
