| Guest | Warning: June 10 08 update with Vista deletes desktop and more I ran the critical update (Vista) and it wiped out the desktop, leaving a blank slate. Each time I restart there is a lenghty message in Chinese with "ok" as the only option. I ran system restore to get back to the time just before this update, which restored my desktop. I am convinced that this update is buggy and should not be installed without a deep backup in place. It works fine with XP but not with Vista in my set of machines. How can this be reported to Microsoft? Or am I doing something wrong? The system is completely legal and registered. -- Ron |

However, on the 11th the following updates were downloaded: kb950759 kb950762 kb951376 kb951698 kb905866 kb950126 kb952714 kb950760 All of these updates installed on my PC without any problem. -- -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert Windows Desktop Experience Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is". | Guest | Re: Warning: June 10 08 update with Vista deletes desktop and more Somewhat in support of the OP, this did seem to be an unusually messy automatic update. I also experienced problems with the Vista updates on June 10 and 11. Initially the computer appeared to be locked up in the morning with a frozen screen saver. A hard shut down and reboot resulted in the updates continuing to install during boot but when the PC did finally finish it was with a blank monitor. In fact there was no signal going to the monitor at all and monitor switched to stand-by mode. As it was the computer had booted but the entire desktop was moved over to the secondary display (TV) which was turned off at the time. Checking the display settings in Vista showed that the primary display had been set to disabled during the update leaving the TV as the only enabled monitor. Checking in the events logs for the 10th and 11th there were hundreds of repeated entries similar to the following-- Windows Servicing started a process of changing package KB950759(Security Update) state from Resolved(Resolved) to Installed(Installed) Windows Servicing identified that package KB950759(Security Update) is not applicable for this system (x3lines) Windows Servicing is setting package KB950759(Security Update) state to Resolved(Resolved) Windows Servicing is setting package KB950759(Security Update) state to Staging(Staging) (x47 lines) Windows Servicing completed the process of changing update 950759-68_neutral_GDR from package KB950759 (Security Update) into Staging(Staging) state (multiple lines from -6 to -68) Windows Servicing is setting package KB950759(Security Update) state to Install Requested(Install Requested)(x6 lines) .. . . and so on. The above in particular was repeated on both the 10th and 11th. There were similar entries for other updates, like KB951376, KB950760, KB951698.
