Vista has ruined my laptop. Help me please.

Im having problems with my windows vista on my other laptop and am
wondering if anyone can help me.
For the past few days it's been overheating and doing an automatic
restart.

Ive had previously trouble with the battery.

This is a refurbished gateway so today it made a decision to freeze on
me, which it has been
doing on and off for a few days along with the restarts.
So in typical dumbass fashion, unplugged it, took battery out and when
i restarted it it
told me to check all the current disc information for issues.

So i did and i ended up finally back into the actual computer and it
froze again.

So once again, restarted, and ended up doing the system start up fix
and after about a half
an hour, i restarted like it instructed to do.

And now it starts up, but is only a black screen with a blinking white
box and the most it
does is make an annoying beeping when i hit a key.

Any ideas or suggestions? Help me please as this is driving me INSANE.
