DVD drive problem

OK this is doing my nut!

All was working super fine, then all of a sudden my DVD-Writer wont
work! this happened after installing some software. Ah! I thought, no
problem uninstall .... no prob still there, System restore then ... ah
no the system wont restore as it said it encounter problems and could
not do a restore. Balls!!! ... now i have no DVD!!

Device manager is saying

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may
be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft
and to see if there is a solution available."

Check for solutions does nothing!, I dont have a driver disk for it to
install but it worked great with default drivers from vista. Any ideas
how i can get this drive working again?

One of the important, yet missing, details is - what is the software that
you uninstalled? Did it happen to be CD or DVD related?
