I have almost same problem as described above, with one exception
when I try shutting down in safe mode, it freezes on "shutting down" screen
when I try shutting down in normal mode, screen goes black
and computer looks like in some "sleep" mode (tho you can't wake it)
I've described problem here: vista shutting down problem

it happens on fresh installation of vista too
my spec is similar to the803's spec, c2quad q6600, gigabyte p35c-ds3r, nvidia 7600gt

motherboard intermittent shutdown

Hi there!

I also have the same issue on a newly self built pc which has simular conponents to yours!{See below). I have spent quite a few hours now working on this and its really trying my patients!!!! I have changed various drivers including the Graphics card but with no change. I have however narrowed the cause down a bit. The only time I can get my pc to shut down every time is when i roll back the Ethernet controller driver back to using the generic windows driver. I'm now not sure what to do, because gigabyte have sent me the up to date correct drivers and have told me that this would work ok. I have seen some of the replys that you have had to this problem and will look into new antivirus software espcially as I am using the freebee AVG 8.0 software. My system is

Hmm..
My problem is still not solved. Shuts down perfectly in Safe Mode.
I'm using AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus too, not the free version though.
If you solve this please let me know how.

I don't see the rest of this thread so don't know the details of your
system, but if your computer shuts down fine in Safe Mode but not in
Regular Mode then something running in Regular Mode is the culprit. Do
clean-boot troubleshooting to determine which program and/or process is the
Bad Guy.

The OP could also try this..

Control Panel > Performance Information > Advanced Tools..

At the top of the AT window, it lists performance issues and what might be
wrong..

Tried Clean Boot but when I did Step 1 and restarted the computer and then tried to shut it down, it still wouldn't shut down so I'm assuming I don't need to do the rest?
And there were 2 programs in Advanced Tools that Mike Hall suggested, I uninstalled them both completely and still no joy
