Upgrade from Basic to Ultimate

I'm running Vista Home Basic and purchased the Vista Ultimate upgrade. I ran
vista upgrade advisor which indicated no problems in upgrading to Ultimate.
However the Upgrade DVD only allows me to perform a clean install rather than
an upgrade, stating that I need to update my OS to a more recent version to
perform an upgrade. I am running the most recent Vista Home Basic. Anybody
have advice on how to get the upgrade done and avoid the clean install?

My guess is that the upgrade DVD includes SP1, and the system you're
trying to upgrade doesn't. So download and install SP1, then apply the
upgrade.

Re: Upgrade from Basic to Ultimate

I think it's probably the other way around. his current install is upgraded
to SP1, but the Ultimate disk he bought is not SP1. When trying to upgrade
Vista will tell you you can not upgrade because the version you are trying
to upgrade to is older (pre sp1) than the version you currently have (sp1).

go into control panel, "programs and features", click, "show upgrades",
uninstall SP1, reboot and then try your upgrade

Re: Upgrade from Basic to Ultimate

I think this is the probable situation. I try your advice and post the
results. Thanks.

It would be the other way around. SP1 is on the hard drive but the dvd is
Vista rtm. If Vista rtm were on the hard drive a dvd at SP1 would be no
problem at all.

Whoever sold you the upgrade kit sold you old product (no SP1 on the dvd).
If you installed SP1 on the hard drive from Windows Update then remove SP1
and then do the upgrade to Vista. After the upgrade reinstall SP1. If your
computer came with SP1 already preinstalled then you need to return the
upgrade kit for refund or replacement with an up to date kit (includes SP1).

Re: Upgrade from Basic to Ultimate

Removing SP1 from the installed Vista Basic allowed my upgrade to take place
to Vista Ultimate. I then reinstalled SP1 and now everything is fine.
Thanks for the quick answer and solution!
