| | Re: How well does the Windows Vista Firewall work? Read that article. It describes a piece of hardware that has an OS installed and on top of that OS is the firewall. It even calls the firewall software. No, I think people who try to differentiate between hardware and software firewalls are splitting hairs. -- Gary S. | | Re: How well does the Windows Vista Firewall work? I consider a dedicated piece of equipment, even though it uses software, that filters content on the network and controls access to be a hardware firewall. The ones I use on the LAN even say Firewall on the equipment. Software firewalls may have a place, but I don't think they are as secure. "Gary S. | | Re: How well does the Windows Vista Firewall work? What makes you say so? Dedicated housing or not, it's still a bunch of software watching what goes by. And, just so I'm sure we're on the same page, when you say "software firewall", are you referring to something installed on a PC or a server, or do you include the firewall in a router as being "software"? After all, that firewall is only one part of the device, not generally considered the most important one, even. That crown belongs to NAT. -- Gary S. | | Re: How well does the Windows Vista Firewall work? What else would you call a piece of hardware whose sole function is to act as a firewall? It is hardware dedicated to run (generally) embedded software, to me that is a hardware firewall. I understand how NAT works, it does better than the so called firewalls built into some routers (that is more of a limited function packet sniffer or IP filter). "Gary S.
