My laptop stopped charging and I finally saved enough to have it repaired
about a month ago. But now I have it back, the news feed gadget won't update
itself, even when I am connected to the internet. I'm stuck with news
headlines from May! What can I do? Thanks in advance.

That is symptomatic of XML registration failure, Ramesh's 'winhelponline'
site has a good checklist.
