Super slow processing when RIPing a cd

I have a vista home premium quar core intel,4GB system . Most often when I
am ripping a cd the process flys right thru. Occasionally, when trying to
rip a cd it will go excrucuatingly slow--ie. maybe 15 minutes to do 20
tracks that are only 3 min. tracks. I opened my system resources and it
shows that I have 2.4GB of available ram so that shouldn't be the problem and
I am running no other applications. If I do a restart and try again, then
the same cd flys right thru. Does anyone have any idea as to what might be
the issue? Thanks.
Carl

Maybe windows is having trouble reading the CD... Can you see errors or
retries?
