    Remote Desktop

I have been unable to use remote desktop to access my PC at home since I
upgraded it from XP Pro to Vista Build 5600. The remote tab under computer
properties indicates that everything is enabled (haven't checked windows
firewall settings as i figured they would be configured already). Any
thoughts on where I am going wrong?

    Hi,

The firewall blocks RD by default, if you haven't already done so, you will
need to reenable it in the exceptions.

    RE: Remote Desktop

Yeah, I have set all of the up. I think I might have a compatibility error
with my router. I can go to whatismyip.com from the pc and see my ip there,
but i am unable to ping it. Port forwarding is all correct and so on. I
have everything set up as I did last time, so I think there might be an
additional "Vista required" step I haven't done yet. Anyone know any
    documentation I can use?

What router are you using? I use a Netgear RT314 which apparently has
problems with Vista. I can use remote desktop from Vista at home to XP
Pro at work just fine. Going the other way it connects but then the
screen routinely freezes for 30-35 seconds making it unusable. Also,
trying to setup a Windows VPN to Vista shows an 800 error. The strange
thing is I have no issues browsing the Internet from Vista or
    downloading files.

Troubleshooting I found I could not PING or do a tracert from Vista
beyond the router (inside the LAN it works fine). Also, using PING from
an XP Pro laptop works fine through the same router. I connected Vista
directly to my broadband modem and it PINGS the WAN fine (indicating a
router problem). I haven't had a chance to test the direct hookup with
Remote Desktop (it will disable the rest of my home LAN). Someone
suggested it may be an MTU issue inside the router but I haven't checked
that yet (have to find my serial cable for the laptop as Vista no longer
    has telnet.

    Later,
    Dave

    Re: Remote Desktop

Vista *does* have telnet, it's just not installed by default. Installation is
done via a command line command - don't recall it exactly, just search the
local help file for 'telnet' and it'll pop right up.
