escape key stopped working

i hit my shift key 5 times in a row and it brought up some sort of
keyboard assistance dialog yes/no question. I X'd it off and now ever
since my escape doesn't work anymore.

The escape key itself still works because certain applications will
recognize it. But it's general functionality for unselecting things
on the desktop, closing dailogs, etc. is completely broken.

Anyone have any ideas on what might have caused this or how I would
fix it? I've looked through all the help and keyboard settings menus
and I can't seem to find anything.

Go to Control Panel>Ease of Access and disable everything.
