| | Re: Logon Sound John, I tried to delete, rename, replace, (and anything else I could think of) the wave within the DLL. I think it could have been replaced with the ''paid'' version of PE Explorer. The trial version I downloaded wouldn't do it. I quit (for now). I would hope M/S would take another look at the idea of having the sound undeletable - it goes against my theory of "my machine my way". What I did was to use a freeware program called Resource Hacker. Move the authui.dll to a temp location, open it with ResHack and delete the Wave resource, then save it. Rename the original authui.dll to authui.bak just in case. Move the edited authui.dll back into system32. I did this from my XP side of my dual boot. UAC was already disabled on Vista. -- Michael Cecil http://home.comcast.net/~macecil/ http://home.comcast.net/~safehex/ http://home.comcast.net/~macecil/hackingvista/ |

| | Re: Logon Sound Michael, Thanks for reply. I cannot move, delete, or do anything to the file except copy it to another location - so I did. I was able to remove the wave resource using ResHack, but I cannot move or copy the modified file back into System 32. I do have UAC turned off. I tired doing this from XP and from within Vista. For some reason I am not allowed to do it. So far I am 0 for 2 with this operation. Thanks again Well, I didn't find it necessary but maybe that's because I was logged into XP with admin rights when I moved the file back. Try logging into XP with admin rights and if you still can't replace the file you could always just take ownership of it first. -- Michael Cecil http://home.comcast.net/~macecil/ http://home.comcast.net/~safehex/ http://home.comcast.net/~macecil/hackingvista/ |

| | Re: Logon Sound Michael, The ''ownership'' thing worked - you are my new hero! As frustrating as this whole deal has been, I learned some things, and that makes it all worth it. Thank you again for your patience and assistance. My computer thanks you too - you saved its life ;o) A silent re-boot..........................................................I love it.
