Vista - explorer stops working when trying to delete desktop icons

so cant delete them.

Hi,

ok, when a program puts a shortcut on the desktop, if I go to delete it by
right clicking or even just highlighting & hitting delete on the keyboard the
computer just stops responding, get a message saying 'windows explorer has
stopped working' & that it is trying to find a solution which it doesnt, just
get the message that 'windows explorer has restarted' which makes the screen
go to just the destop pic before loading back.
(do not get the options which usually appear when right clicking just that
explorer has stopped working)

If I put something on the desktop (not a shortcut) it will delete, but if I
download a programme (save it to desktop so I can virus scan it) before
installing, I cannot delete that either.

Have you tried dragging it to the recycle bin?
