Memory Resident Programs

I have Home Premium Vista. My question is about the icons that appear in
the bottom right corner of the screen. A bunch of them. These, I have
always been told, represent programs or portions of programs that run and
reside in memory upon booting of the computer.
When I had XP, I would do Start - Run - type "msconfig" - OK and select the
"Startup" tab in the dialog box that appeared. There I could select which
of these little programs I wanted and which not. How do I do that in Vista?
Thanks for your time. Otto

It is always better to stop programs from starting with Windows from within
the programs themselves, so look in their Options before changing anything
with msconfig - you're just examining things at this stage. If a program
doesn't offer any way to control startup from its Preferences, then use
msconfig to uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out.

Start Orb>Search box>type: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab.
You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get
a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be
blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then
tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Services.msc.

Start Orb>Search box>type: services.msc and when it appears in the Results
box above, right-click and choose "Run As Administrator".

Do not stop any services unless you really, really know what you're doing.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

Re: Memory Resident Programs

best to start by right clicking on each of the icons and check the options/properties to see if there is an option to NOT start with windows.

you can reach MSCONFIG by using
WINDOWS KEY + R
to get the RUN dialogue box.

Four points:

1. They represent some running programs, but not necessarily those which
start automatically upon booting. Some programs which start later can also
minimize there.

2. Not all programs that start automatically when booting manifest
themselves by an icon there.

3. You can run MSCONFIG under Vista, just as you did under XP/

4. MSCONFIG should not be the first thing you try. On each program you don't
want to start automatically (whether or not it is in the tray), check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily and best
be stopped that way. Be sure to choose an option to not start, not just to
not show the icon. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run
line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start
automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running
the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you
should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but
*which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no
effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these with at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't
find it there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

Re: Memory Resident Programs

Try right-clicking the Start button, select Properties, under the Start Menu
tab click classic, then ok.
nor when you click the start button, run will be an option.

Why? - I've been doing this for many, many years without consequence.

Re: Memory Resident Programs

Mainly because it keeps the startup list in msconfig as uncluttered as
possible, I prefer to do it via the application itself as well, but there
will be no severe consequences if you do it via msconfig, other than maybe
some items re installing themselves back into startup, some only remain
disabled if you do it via the application.
