"Data being verified and repaired"?

(Vista Ultimate/64 system, runs fine.)

Earlier today there was a brief (less than a minute) power
failure here. After power returned it took the system a
while to get back to normal, but it now seems to be
operating as before - with one small exception. In the
lower right corner there is a new icon, never seen before,
which looks like two oil barrels side by side. Each is
divided into thirds, and the colors (white, red, blue) flash
and rotate. When the cursor is placed over this icon the
following message pops up:

"The data in a volume is being verified and
repaired."

This has continued for several hours. During that time the
rest of the computer seems to be working fine.

If I double left click on this new icon I get a screen
related to "Intel Matrix Storage", but doesn't call for any
action. If I double right click on it I get a message with
two options:

Launch Matrix Storage Console
Ignore Current Alert for Now

If I then either left or right single click on the first
message I get the same screen that I get with the double
left click.

I have not yet tried clicking on the second message. I
thought I should get some feedback from others first.

Any ideas about what is going on? Anything I should worry
about?

Intel Matrix Storage is, among other things, able to support various RAID
configurations, although it also claims to do Good Things even in a
single-drive environment. Do you have multiple hard disks in your computer?

If you do, this sounds like it's trying to repair errors caused by the power
hit. I've never used it, but that's consistent with what you're describing,
including the icon of two disk drives.

You don't specify what make and model computer you've got, but this should
be described somewhere in the hardware instructions and/or online help. See
also the Intel page that describes the product:

No. There is one hard disk, configured by the manufacturer
(HP) into a C and D disk/drive. I have an external hard
drive, and I believe it is an Intel product.

An HP Pavilion, d4996t.

Checked that and found nothing relevant.

The good news (I guess) is that after 5 or 6 hours the icon
went away, and a small message appeared saying my data was
protected. So, I think this problem corrected itself, and I
may have been hasty in seeking help.

Thanks for your assistance.

Best regards.
