Extra desktop, how do I kill it?

Vista home premium. 32. HP about 1 1/2 years old.
Not my only problem, but the latest. I've had strange files show up
in places they shouldn't be before, but this is worst of all so far.
I discovered that there is suddenly a folder called Desktop with a
path /owner, and it has besides some of the files that the REAL
desktop shows and a folder called Documents which is empty.
(In my attempts to fix this before I called in System Restore, the
Documents folder within the extra Desktop had within it an empty
folder named Desktop.)
Unfortunately I don't have a decent recent backup , so I have to
figure out how to get rid of it.
I throw this other problem in because it is sort of related, and might
give someone a clue. I've only recently figured out what was
happening, but not yet how to get rid of it.
I use WordPerfect, and when it adds something to the User Word List,
it makes a new file in a folder which it puts in a Documents folder.
Too bad that it is not the Documents folder that is my very own
Documents folder, and having two Documents folders louses other things
up a bit.
How can I persuade Vista (and whatever else program might contribute
to the mess) that I want them out of here by sundown?

tia, of course
Thanks
