32bits or 64

I'm going to buy a new computer as my 10 year old one has finally had it.
It seems just about everything now come with Windows Vista (32 bit or 64
bit). My question is what's better for me and which one is giving people
more trouble? Some models even give you the option of going with XP. I
don't know what to do. Would appreciate it if someone would explain how the
difference between 32 and 64 could affect me. I believe I heard or read
something about compatibility problems with with either 32 or 64 (or both).
Anything you can tell me would help. I don't trust the sales people and
manufacturers. They primarily only want to sell you something.
Al
PS - It's somewhat strange, IMHO, that Consumer Reports, that just rated
computers, made no mention as to whether we should buy 32 or 64. Seems they
side stepped this subject.

Re: 32bits or 64

well, to pick between 32 and 64bit depends on what you are going to be using the computer for. dependes on the hardware

Dont buy windows vista Basic, go for home premium or Ultimate.

on the 32bit OS there's a limitation, and it wont use 4GB of ram, this issue dont happen on the 64bit.

i am running vista business 32bit on this computer, and i've had no problems, on my other computer i am running windows vista ultimate 64bit and i have not problems either. all applications that i installed on the 64bit are for 32bit, and they run fine.

gaming computers are going to start to move on to 64bit soon, and very fast.

For home use you can safely go with 32-bit, even though most computers sold
nowadays will support 64-bit. That way, you will not run into any 64-bit
compatibility issues with legacy programs either. It will not be imperative
to have a 64-bit OS for years to come yet.

32bit unless you have a specific need to run a 64bit application which
requires more than 2gb RAM in normal operation..

Read through the posts here and you'll soon come to realize that if you can
get XP you should grab it. Vista, in all its incarnations, is going to
cause you problems beyond belief.

Vista 64 has been the best, most stable OS I've ever used

Re: 32bits or 64

Hello

It depends what Processor the PC runs as not all processors are 64bit
compitable. Also most pre-built PC by big names do not supply 64Bit OS.

If you MUST get a new machine with Vista, I would go with a 32 bit system
unless there is something you do that requires a 64 bit system.
There are several versions of Vista. If you need FAX, all but the higher end
versions do NOT include it.
But there are third party solutions that work as well or better than the
built in version.
The 64 bit version has an ongoing problem with drivers.
There are not all that many programs that are 64 bit yet anyway.
Personally, I'd get a machine with downgrade rights to XP and let the
manufacturer configure XP for you.
That way if you decide to go to Vista later (if MS ever fixes it, maybe by
SP5...), you wiill already have 'paid for it' and can upgrade free.
