| vista home basic 32 | Extending C: drive I am nervous about extending my C: drive. A wonderful one over on another forum directed me here. I have a vista recovery cd. That said I had earlier taken D: drive and removed all recovery information. I shrunk C: to allocate for D: Dumb move, for some unknown thought at the time, I felt I could seperate the spaces and it would be more useful. Its not, so now I want to delete all that I have (which isnt anything really) and repartition it back to C: I was given instructions of how to do so, and understand that. What I am worried about is at this point when I right click on C: there isnt an extend option, its shaded and unusable, now will that come up a usable option after I delete D:? And then I can 'add' the 50G back over to C:? Im worried as I have already used 'shrink' with C: and that it wont take the D: back. signed, boxorocks |

It just has not been that long since you first posted and some people come online at different hours. That's all. ![]() Since you wiped out the D: recovery partition, you could create another D: partiton, but you will not be able to restore it as a recovery partition again. Once you delete a recovery partition it is gone. You can extend whatever drive letter to the left of the D: partition into D: , but two or more drive letter to the left or to the right of D: . The only way to have one large drive again is to delete all the partitions except C: , then extend them one at a time until you get back to extending C: into the last one left. | vista home basic 32 | Re: Extending C: drive Hi Shawn, I am sorry for the mini tantrum. Computers bring out the worst in me. ![]() When I first bought this computer, I made sure to have the recovery cds. So that I have. roughly two years ago after receiving everything, I then deleted D: (recovery) and then partitioned C: to make two separate drives. all went well. I had done that because at that time I was considering putting a different OS on here, I then decided to not do that. Now, I wanted to consolidate both drives into one as C: is running out of space and its a pain in the butt to use the two different areas. So now I have deleted D: and extended C: and have all the GB back on the C: drive. All seems well enough, except now, I have a slow boot. I still have to defrag and I am still installing a couple items that I wanted to keep from the D: drive that I had backed up. So I do have quite a bit of house cleaning left to do and hope that will solve the slow boot. So that being said, if in the future I do need to use my recovery cd will I be able to do so, only having the one drive. (C: or do I need to create a separate drive? The earlier post has me confused, but hey most computer issues do that to me ![]() thanks again, and I will check and defrag my patience mode. |

| Vista x64 Ultimate SP2, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 | Re: Extending C: drive No problem Kate, Yes, you will be able to use your OEM recovery CD whenever you need to do a clean reinstall of Vista. You might also create yourself the Recovery Disc in this tutorial so you can use it to run the System Recovery Options screen to just repair instead of a clean reinstall. Create a Recovery Disc You might also look at these item to help improve your computer's performance. Speed Up the Performance of Vista Hope this helps, Shawn |

| vista home basic 32 | Re: Extending C: drive Ah very good! so what the personal recovery cd is like doing a systems restore via cd disc?. If something were to happen I could use that to restore to the recorded point of making that disc. I did a quickie look/see at the speed up on vista, Ive done most of that, but will take more time and see if there is something, which I'm sure I have missed. |

| Vista x64 Ultimate SP2, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 | Re: Extending C: drive Kate, Yes, the one from the tutorial will let you do that. The OEM Recovery CD that you already had will only allow to reinstall Vista back to what it was when you first got the computer. |

| vista home basic 32 | Re: Extending C: drive Thanks Shawn your the best! That is a much better solution than having to loose all of what Ive unwittingly accumulated... ![]() Although there are days! I'd like to start anew, but after a bit of thought,I know me full well and it wouldn't take any time at all to fill everything back up with dumb stuff I dont really need. ![]() I do photo restoration, I'm also a webmaster and have many different applications that I need to do all this work. Heres a real dah question - I know about getting more memory, Ive done that and now run at 3GB. Is there a similar way to do so with disc space? or do I need to purchase an entirely new drive.? |
