Disk Management Query Error

Good afternoon,

I am attempting to shrink the Vista volume, so I can dual boot another OS. I've done this countless times and have not gotten this error. There seems to be a good amount of cases where people run into system files that are not movable. The thing here is that I can't even get to this point. It fails and tells me to check the system event log for details. There is a tab above, which says Event Viewer. I assumed that is what the error was describing, but I only see two errors 'in the last hour' --it says that. Neither of the two were the error, though. I am assuming there is some other way to check this log and, if so, I can post that here. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Disk Management Query Error

Hi,

Disk Management will only be to utilise the part of the hard drive that is free at the end of the last unmovable file. If this is what you have run into , then you will need a 3rd party partition app. to do the job.

Before you do that, it is definitely worth getting auslogics disk defrag, free from

www.auslogics.com

Defrag the drive concerned - the graphical display will show yellow blocks - these are system files and you won't be able to shrink the volume past them. Check to see how much you can shrink the volume now.

If that's not enough

Uninstall microsoft SQL server (if you have it ) from control panel > uninstall a program. Run Auslogics defrag again. If it looks as if the offending yellow block has gone, see how much you can shrink the volume

If that's not enough

Run disk cleanup and clear hibernation -check with auslogics, then remove you restore points , check with auslogics again, if necessary you can delete the pagefile.

Hope this helps
