Did you delete files or did you uninstall it? If you just deleted files,
then you didn't account for registry entries that must be deleted as well or
registry entries are hanging around after the uninstall, because you started
deleting files.

If you have deleted all files.....Then I suggest to you to re-install
SQL Server, as Arnold stated...registry entries still remain in your
system.

apart this... SQL Server service also looking for their files and
binaries @ startup and SQL Instances too. So re-install, it'll
definitely prompt to repair installation.....First repair it and then
Uninstall.

What I suspect is that there are several components of SQL Server 2005
installed on the machine, which I have on my machine that need to be
uninstalled. I think the installer for SQL Server 2005 is looking at the
other sub-components that are installed showing in the Control
Panel/Programs and Features, and it has determined that SQL server is
already installed, possibly.

I suggest that you go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and uninstall
everything that has SQL Server in the title, if you have not already done
that. That's the only thing it can be that other components of SQL Server
are showing in the installed programs list. If you have down all of that,
uninstalled those components too, then I suggest you use Regedt32 and search
the registry for any entries that deal with SQL Server and see if it needs
to be deleted.
