Document not saved

When saving a file from Excel 2007 or Word 2007 to a network server, I get "Document not saved" and a zero-byte temporary file created on the server.

MSKB938716 describes my problem in considerable detail, and explains how it arises. However, when I attempt to apply the hotfix specified in the article, I get a message saying "This hotfix does not apply to your system."

This makes Office 2007 pretty well unusable on my system. I don't want to have to save everything to C:\ first!

Any suggestions??

Thanks, Chris.

Re: Document not saved

Sounds to me like the fix needs to be on the server end, not the client end.
The KB article you referenced does not say anything about saving to a server
and the fact that you can save the file to your C: drive pretty much narrows
the problem down to the server, not your PC.

Re: Document not saved

Thank you for your prompt reply, Richard.

The MSKB article only applies if CSC is enabled, implying the existence of a server. I've looked into this in a bit more detail. I am saving files to my personal directory on the server. The Vista computer in question does not have CSC enabled, but there is an XP computer on the network that has CSC enabled, and that has my personal directory on the server available offline. If I save the file to a location that is not available offline on any other computer, the problem disappears.

Reviewing various threads on other forums, the problem has been reported with servers running all Windows server operating systems from Windows 2000 onwards.

I don't have Office 2007 installed on an XP computer, but that would be the next thing to try. However, this is close to being the last straw with Office 2007, and I will probably spend the time uninstalling it and reverting to Office 2003.

Anyway, thank you for your advice.

Best regards

Chris

Re: Document not saved

Well, a bit more progress... If I put the XP computer that has an offline copy of my personal directory online, and synchronise the offline copy, I can then save successfully to my personal directory from Office 2007 on my Vista PC!

My guess is that it's actually the XP computers that need to have the CSC hotfix applied, but unfortunately, Microsoft only provides it for Vista.

As the hotfix is included in Office 2007 SP1, it will only arise when an XP / Office 2003 computer has an offline copy of the folder, and there's a Vista / Office 2007 computer trying to save to the same place.

At least I understand it now, but it's still pretty irritating.

Cheers

Try turning off your anti virus, or disabling client side caching.
That's an option in the file share recources manager on the server.

Re: Document not saved

Folks, I tried everything (turning off Offline files [CSC] on both sides, the reg hacks, etc, etc) to remedy this problem on my Vista 32-bit/Office 2K7 system, with the exception of the hotfix. No joy

Even though I have full admin rights on this server, I could not save an Excel doc to the share that holds much of what I work on. Found that I could save to other nearby folders, however!

On a lark, I used the permissions settings to remove the inherited permissions to the folder, using the option to copy them from above to preserve the perms. Once I did this, I can save to the folder! I set the perms back to inherited as they had been, and can still save to the folder.

I conclude that the permissions to the folder were corrupt, and what I did corrected that. Somehow Office 2K7, with or without Vista's help, was unable to deal with the corrupted perms, or perhaps is more paranoid about the permissions than are previous versions of Office.

Enjoy!

Re: Document not saved

Thanks for the tip, Rontaki. Sometimes, if you try to save again, it does it OK, and sometimes it doesn't give you the "Document not saved" message - but doesn't save it either!! I've lost too much through this. For me, life's too short to get to the bottom of it. I've uninstalled Office2007 and gone back to Office2003. In 20+ years, it's the first time I've ever had to do this with a Microsoft product. Thanks, anyway.

Cheers,

Chris
