Memory Card, USB Flash Drive, CD, DVD... Windows Easy Transfer Easy Transfer Cable http://tinyurl.com/3yupab or... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ytransfer.mspx -- John Inzer |

| VISTA HOME PREMIUM X64/ 7 x64 / 7x86 | Re: best way to transfer xp files to vista Hi Dedet, Good to have you back now you've got your SP1 sorted out. Depends how much stuff you are moving - suggest using whatever you have already got that the files and settings you want to move will fit on. If you are thinking of using Windows Easy transfer - might be useful as in theory everything should then be in the right format, filenames. Here's how to do it: Put The Vista dvd in the Xp computer - the dvd should run and produce a window ( if not , just run setup from autoplay ) - at the bottom click " Transfer Files and Settings from another computer". Click Next, you get a Welcome screen, click Next, click "Start A New Transfer ( I want to select files and settings to transfer to a new computer )", click "My Old Computer", then you get the options to select what you want to transfer and how you want to transfer it etc. onto the removable media/drive. When done, plug your removable media/drive into your Vista machine. Then on the Vista computer, Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Windows Easy Transfer , you get the Welcome screen. Click Next, click "Continue a transfer in progress", then select "No,I've copied files and settings to a CD,DVD or other removable media" etc. to transfer from the removable media/drive. These links will give you the idea http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...html#preparing http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...-Transfer.html Or you could just copy it to and from the removable media using copy and paste, or better yet Copy To and Move To - if you don't have these on your right click context menu, see here - (download the .reg file to both computers and double click it ) Context Menu - Add COPY TO FOLDER and MOVE TO FOLDER Hope this helps SIW2 |

| Vista (6.00.2) Ultimate 32bit Service Pack 2 | Re: best way to transfer xp files to vista Hi SIW2, Glad to be back. Thanks for the quick return and the links. I'll spend some time tomorrow educating my self with the links and come up with a plan. I am anxious to fire up the old Fujitsu. It will be a handy tool for work. I've got my copy of xp pro which will be good for my needs I think. Thanks for the ideas. dedet |

| Vista (6.00.2) Ultimate 32bit Service Pack 2 | Re: best way to transfer xp files to vista Hi SIW2, As it turned out the wife did not have that much she needed of the old laptop. Mainly videos and some special irreplaceable photos of her grand parents and dad and her favorites. So it all fit on a cd and it was a "move to folder" thing. I did review the links that you offered up as well as poked around to familiarize myself. I"m sure I will use one of the methods to my advantage sooner than later. The up load to her new rig was uneventful. Some new folders for her placed where she wanted them and I was out of jail. Thanks for the knowledge. dedet |

| Vista (6.00.2) Ultimate 32bit Service Pack 2 | Re: best way to transfer xp files to vista Hi barman58, The meaning of the word irreplaceable was a lesson I learned the hard way early on, and one that should be driven home hard to all. To all a heads up. It's in a safe in a case off site with a copy at home. Thanks Nigel wise words. dedet |

| Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: best way to transfer xp files to vista In a message from Walter Goldschmidt, he wrote that he used one laptop running Xp for his scanner and "I then remote to the laptop to use the scanner." Could someone translate this so I could do the same. My pc is old and I bought a new laptop with this !@#$!#$ vista that won't let me use my scanner. I hate the thought of having to buy a new scanner too when this one works fine on xp. Vista screws up the software and there's no new driver... Thanks |
