Vista desktop files disappear

My wife had several documents stored on her Vista desktop. They are suddenly
gone. I've set Explorer to display hidden files and done a thorough search of
her had drive and recycle bin. The missing files are flat gone.

I've searched this forum and done Google searches. I can find somewhat
related problems but none of the solutions apply to this particular case.

So far as I can determine this is a very unusual case. Any suggestions?

Re: Vista desktop files disappear

If you accidentally delete or rename a file or folder, you can restore a
shadow copy of that file or folder, but you need to know the location that
the file or folder was saved to. To restore a file or folder that was
deleted or renamed, follow these steps:

Click to open Documents.

Click the arrow next to Folders at the bottom of the left pane.

In the Folders list, open the folder that contained the file or folder that
was deleted or renamed.

Right-click somewhere in the folder (without selecting a file or folder),
and then click Restore previous versions.

Double-click a previous version of the folder that contains the file or
folder you want to restore. (For example, if a file was deleted today,
choose a version of the folder from yesterday, which should contain the
file.)

In the folder, drag the file or folder that you want to restore to another
location, such as your desktop or another folder.

The version of the file or folder is saved to the location that you
selected.

Tip
If you don't remember the exact file or folder name or its location, you can
search for it by typing part of the name in the Search box in Documents.

Re: Vista desktop files disappear

in your case since it’s the desktop try expanding the USER folder as in this
screenshot below, then right clicking on the desktop folder
and following the instructions I gave before

Re: Vista desktop files disappear

I forgot to mention that shadow copies exist but due to Microsoft stupidity
you cannot retrieve them in versions other than Ultimate or Business

however there is a free tool called shadow explorer that lets you do this

read about this here:

If he listens to you, and installs something on the same drive as his lost
data, he is very likely to lose some of what has been lost. Also, there is
no need to pay for some sückerware, when there are free alternatives.

I recommend he burns the ISO file version on another computer, and then uses
that to recover the files on the dodgy Vista one.
