Search the ng for "virus" and you will turn up tons of advice.

AVG from Grisoft and Avast from Alwil:

http://www.grisoft.com/
http://www.avast.com/

Both have trials and also free versions for non-commercial home use.

I've used both and they both do a fine job of detecting viruses, but
they both have minor issues unrelated to Vista.

I find Avast is bit better at updates and catching viruses "as they
arrive during a data transfer", but it's also much more intrusive and
uses more resources than AVG. It's also still in beta version
(4.7.887) for Vista which is not on their homepage (you have to hit
their server directly). Use this link to get info on the beta version
and a download link:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23424.0

I also found Avast blocks data in NNTP scans causing my newsreader to
not report transfers. Earlier versions blocked DUmeter from "seeing"
downloaded data, and that was fixed, but the NNTP is still blocked. I
had to disable NNTP scanning (in Vista and XP) for it to work, which
isn't a big deal because the resident scanning picks up viruses
anyway, but it is an annoying issue.

AVG being less intrusive doesn't interfere with any data, and it does
daily checks for updates instead of every few hours, which is more
than adequate. By default the SMTP server module is disabled for
outbound email scanning, but a couple of clicks will re-enable it for
full scanning. Use this link for the free version:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-free

Avast is free but you need to register to get a home user key valid
for one year, at which time you can simply get another key. AVG Free
version is completely free, just install it and go.

Have fun!

You are in it and using it now. NewsGroup. You may think of it as a web page
because of the way you are accessing it, but it IS a newsgroup.
