| Guest | RE: A problem with Volume Shadow Services Almost exactly the same problem for me on a Vista Ultmate 32-bit SP1 system. But I'm getting the error everytime I start Vista, and also in response to certain commands, eg vassadmin list writers. Hunted for several hours trying to find possible solutions; nothing so far. I'm hoping that another post here might prompt some input from the good chaps at Microsoft. Many thanks Sebastian "Sergei Zhirikov" wrote:

set everyone full access on the com catalog folder. If that fixes it then carefully follow the steps in the technet article to set them properly. Hmmm maybe you have to turn off the "inherit permissions from parent" crap??? | ||||||||||||

| Guest | Re: A problem with Volume Shadow Services I agree that it will come down to permissions being incorrectly set somewhere. I'm happy to try giving Everyone full access, but I'm not sure which folder is the COM+ Catalog you refer to. Is it the Registration folder within %winroot%? Can you advise? I also looked at the various options within the Advanced Security Settings dialog and toyed with experimenting with 'Replace existing ...', but then got cold feet. Here we are talking only of the System Writer not showing up properly, with associated error, and I didn't want to break things that were working. Fingers crossed for some MVP input. Not certain if this may help - relates to Volume Shadow Copy Error 0x800423f4 - writer error: non retryable . However, at the bottom half of the link it explains how to do this

| Guest | RE: A problem with Volume Shadow Services Very kind of you to contribute. Thank you. I did find similar suggestions during my hunting. Trouble is that I fail at almost the first hurdle. Executing regsvr32 ole32.dll (from a command prompt with Administrator privileges) results in the following: The module "ole32.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005. So I hunt on that and find others with the same problem but no resolution. I have done a Vista scan of system files per one suggestion. All reported OK - no missing files. SO I continued down the list, some successes, some other failures to register. Rebooted; same problem (CAPI2 513 errors in the event log and missing System Writer entry when I do vssadmin list writers). I'm beginning to think that the permission problem is within the registry rather than within the file system. So I tried disabling anti-virus (Kaspersky) and then running regsvr32 ole32.dll again. Same result. It may be time for a call to Microsoft since the MSDN newsgroups (to which I subscribe) don't have a section for Vista and it doesn't seem that anybody from Microsoft is monitoring this thread. There again, I'm not seeing any particular problems with functionality so perhaps I let it go. Like other posters though, I hate seeing errors in the event log. With thanks and regards Sebastian "SIW2" wrote:
