Dreamscene - is this a broken feature?

Hey gang,

It has been a while since I gave this a try, this afternoon decided to load
up the waterfall dreamscene as my desktop background.
I run Vista Ultimate 64 bit, SP1, with all updates.
I have an Nvidia 8800 640 mb video card, with the latest drivers.
I also have the latest Direct X run time update.

So I set the dreamscene as my background, and immediately, upon open or
closing windows, started getting a blank screen, then it would restore, with
a message the display driver stopped working but has been restored.
I had media player playing, and it stopped, with a message I had run out of
memory ( I have 4gb of ram ).

Is this typical, for trying to run a Dreamscene background? I do not have
any issues like this with the std vista background, system is rock solid.

Thanks for any tips here,

Re: Dreamscene - is this a broken feature?

Sorry I can't offer any help but I have a similar problem with Vista
Ultimate 32 bit, each time I set one of the dreamscene programs as
background before I end the day my screen goes black and I get a message
that dreamscene has had a problem and needs to close. I have had this
problem for about a year now. So to answer your question I would say "yes,
this is a broken feature".

Re: Dreamscene - is this a broken feature?

I also had problems running Dream Scene on my computer - until I upgraded to
a different M/B and a more powerful CPU. I guess the 4 gig of RAM helps
also.

It is not for the marginally equipped computers.

I like Dreamscene and I've played with it a bit. I've even created my
own Dreamscene clips and they...work OK, sorta. My personal requirement
for a Dreamscene is that it be static -- whatever motion there is must
be confined to its area. I like the waterfall Dreamscene because even
though the water gives the impression that it is moving, in fact it's
just throbbing in place. The only satisfactory Dreamscene I created on
my own involved the house on the prairie in the movie "Days of Heaven."
A flag waves, geese waddle around in the front yard, the prairie
grasses blow, but nothing actually goes anywhere -- looking at that
scene on my screen doesn't give me vertigo.

But....

Whenever I launch an application that requires Vista to change the
screen resolution -- to shut down Aero Glass temporarily -- my desktop
goes to black until I right-click on the desktop and re-load a
Dreamscene or graphic.

That's so annoying that I have given up on Dreamscene. In my opinion,
it's broken.

Just for the record, I'm running 3 gigabytes of RAM on an Asus P5K mbo
with a Core 2 Quad processor and an ATI HD2600 graphics card with the
latest drivers.

As I said, I like Dreamscene. Sure wish it worked.

I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit, an ATI graphics card and 4MB of RAM. I've
never had any problems running any of the DreamScenes, including the ones I
downloaded from WinCustomize.

It sounds like you're in the lucky minority then

Some themes work better than others. Better in the fact that they take longer to crash. I gave up on Dreamscenes ages ago because it was so unstable.

I run an Intel Core2 Quad 45nm chip at 3.6 ghz, on a 780i mb, with 4gb of
ram, and a Nvidia 8800 GTS 640 mb graphics card.

They all work fine on my system, you can also try DeskScapes and see if you have more luck, they have some cool backgrounds there and most of them are free.

Re: Dreamscene - is this a broken feature?

Now using a Pentium 4 hyper threading processor (3.2 gig), 4 gig RAM and a
6800GT video card.

Dream Scene works fine at this point. Sorry you are having problems.
