Vista - no sounds!!!!!!!

Sounds are turned on in Vista yet they don't play. What setting could I
have missed and what can cause sounds to stop playing? The speakers work
fine. All connections are secure.

Re: Vista - no sounds!!!!!!!

Hello,

Have you installed your audio drivers? Usually you may have to install audio drivers twice. The first time removes the old version and restarts, then the second time installs the new version and restarts.

Also check in the Taskbar properties in the tutorial below to make sure that you have the "Volume" icon checked to enable it, then make sure that the volume is not muted and that the volume level is up high enough to hear it.

Notification Area - System Icons

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I had it twice where I had lost sound on Vista.

One time it happened, because I went into the sound properties and some
how changed the output to external speakers. I had to change it back to
head phones as the output so that the laptop could play DVD movies and
other general things Vista did in using sound.

It took me sometime to figure out what I had did to cause the problem.

The second time is when I allowed a Windows Update to update the sound
card's driver thinking that would be ok to do, and it took out the sound.

I had to go to Device Manger and Roll Back to the previous driver for
the sound card. I should have known better to allow MS to have anything
to do with updating a device's driver, a no no.

Hi Shawn, thanks, I did get the icon back.... but I finally called HP tech
support. It was just one thing after another. It was getting overwhelming
and I'm not getting any work done what with all the time I was spending
trouble shooting and seeking answers. I never had such problems with a PC
in the past. Finally, after spending almost 30 minutes online with him I did
a System Restore from SafeMode from as far back as possible. Apparently
either a MS-update was a problem, or one of the Graphic editors I installed
was corrupt or clashed with other software. The SR seems to have cured the
problem/s. Whewww... I think I'll take this weekend off.
BTW, the tech at HP really sounded sincere and took as much time as needed
to try and find the answers.

Oh yeah, I've done things like that in the past but always got it figured
out and moved on........

The HP tech I spoke to tonight seemed to think an "update" may have caused
some of these problems I've had, so in SafeMode, I did a System Restore from
over a week ago. Sounds are back now. Everything even "feels" more normal
with this PC if that makes any sense.

That's why I don't let Windows Update do updates automatically. I let it
notify me only that updates are available. I then goto the Windows
Update site a choose which ones I want, and I right-click the line and
select Hide so that the ones I don't want will not show again.

See if there are any new drivers you need for your
soundcard. I had this problem on my home PC.

What about the speaker level in sound dialgo box, will it be tuned to zero
or muted?

Sound Drivers

Hey there!

if the Audio drivers are related to Sigmatel, there seems to be an issue with the OS and Sound drivers....
Also, do you have SP 1 installed on your system?

Chaitanya
