Vista - vista performance

hi,iwould like a bit of advice regarding the performance of vista.I do a lot
of video converting and file copying(from a external hard drive)also
unzipping rar files, my question is will disabling as much of the vista "eye
candy"as possible make much difference to the speed of these tasks.i am aware
that file conversion is heavy on recsoureses and much will depend on my
laptops specs,i am running vista hp sp1 2gb ram dual core 1.6 processor.I
dont have any complaints about vista and generally it does a good job but can
be a bit sluggish when i am using a lot of rescoureses especialy copy and
paste every thing just about locks up then and it will take anything from
1mins to 1hour to copy a 700mb file depending on the weather while i am
writing this i am unpacking afile that is listed as 15gb in its propertiesand
at the moment it is at 82% after 33mins does this sound about right? any
advice will be appreciated

In addition to Joe's post, you could really see some improvement by adding more RAM. For what you are doing the more the better, but you should have at least 4 GB.

hi,thanks for the quick resonse,i am disabling alot of stuff i dont really
need running. i dont think i can add any more ram as my laptop specs say it
is 2gb max ,any idea why that is,i bought it as 1gb and quickly put the other
gb in after a month of using it so i will turn off anything i dont need and
see how much difference it makes ,thanks

It's just how many RAM slots that your motherboard has and support. That's all. Some motherboards will just support more RAM than others.

Cutting down on how much you have running at one time can help while you are doing the intense video converting.

3. All 32-bit client versions of Windows (not just Vista/XP) have a
4GB address space. That's the theoretical upper limit beyond which you
can not go.

But you can't use the entire 4GB of address space. Even though you
have a 4GB address space, you can only use *around* 3.1GB of RAM.
That's because some of that space is used by hardware and is not
available to the operating system and applications. The amount you can
use varies, depending on what hardware you have installed, but can
range from as little as 2GB to as much as 3.5GB. It's usually around
3.1GB.

Note that the hardware is using the address *space*, not the actual
RAM itself. The rest of the RAM goes unused because there is no
address space to map it too.

thanks brink, i am reading your articles now on increasing hd perfomance
including ext hd my settings were wrong as suggested in your article i have
set them to high perfomance and enabled write caching (havnt restarted yet as
i am going to continue to read the article first) i will post back to let you
all know what difference it made
