Upgraded from 5600 to 5728

All is well. :-)

I upgraded my laptop. Took 126 minutes. However,
I had installed quite a few programs on 5600. I had
debated about uninstalling some things- I decided to
do whatever the Compatibility advisor said do- no
conflicts were indicated. I even left Avast installed-
but real-time turned off. So far, so good. I also had
Office 2003 Professional installed, all seems well.
Lots of other programs, too. I had figured we wouldn't
be getting another release, so I went ahead and installed
the programs I wanted.

Still had to go through using my XP drivers for sound.
The Sigmatel drivers that are first installed never work-
I must first use my XP drivers. The sound works, and then
I run Update, download those drivers, and it's all good. I do
wish I didn't have to do all that, oh well.

Most of my settings were applied correctly, no biggies.
WinMail and Outlook settings and messages all in place.
IE working fine.

Everything seems okay.

Oh, where are the new sounds?

Re: Upgraded from 5600 to 5728

Depending on how many applications you have installed, it would probably take more time to do a fresh install rather than an upgrade, but you might run into fewer problems. If you were going from XP to Vista, I there is no way that I would want to do an upgrade install of Vista. There are jus far too many programs that are not compatible that run in XP but not in Vista.

Re: Upgraded from 5600 to 5728

It NEVER takes more time to do a custom install than an upgrade install. An upgrade install requires Setup to move files, settings, and applications to another part of the hard drive, lay down a fresh image of Vista, install it, then reapply the settings, replace the files, and reinstall the apps.

Re: Upgraded from 5600 to 5728

Diskeeper, ZoneAlarm, BitDefender, Nero Ultra 7.0, to name just four. I am sure that others can list more non-compatible programs.

Cyberlink PowerDirector 5/PowerProducer 2 or 3 will not work in Vista (to my
knowledge)

Most system level utilities such as Drive Image, Partition Magic, firewalls
such as Kerio personal firewall, certain CD/DVD suites.

RE: Upgraded from 5600 to 5728

Still unable to access the TV-In video features of my ATI All-In-Wonder 9600
XT Video Card. Dual monitors work great. Glass looks great. All major
programs that I use (except Nero!!) work fine, but my All-In-Wonder video
card has been reduced to a simple straight-forward card at this point.
