is Vista for real

My new HP came preinstalled with Vista; like I had an option.

But its seems the simple things are still broken:

1. Empty the trash and several items are still there. If you close
the trash window, then reopen, they are gone. This is the simple
stuff.
2. My desktop icons seem to take on a life of there own. Not sure
where these icons came from, but there doesn't appear to be any way to
set them to what they should be.
3. iTunes | Radio is know rebuffering virutally any station I want to
listen to and try and accomplish some other task; like going to a web
site. I thought this was a multitasking environment? I never had
these issues in XP.
4. My folder views seem to have their own agenda. I can set the
folder view the way I want it, and it works fine for a couple of days,
then comes up with something totally off the wall.

I do have SP1 installed, but if this is the best there is I don't want
it. I'm going back to XP.

Re: is Vista for real

ToddGeck, back to your 4 questions:
1. True, I have seen this a few times pertaining to very large files in
the bin. But they ARE gone after you deleted them.
2. "set them to what they should be" - what do you think they should
be? Or are you talking about their position on the desktop. Btw: I never
keep any icons on the desktop. They are all in AppLauncher in the
sidebar or in Quick Launch.
3. That could have several causes. For starters, how much RAM do you
have?
4. Yes, That happens to me too. Does not bother me too much though.

All of this stuff sounds like the typical OEM installation crap. Erase it
all and do a clean install. All of your problems will go away.

At least they always have for me. I NEVER keep the install that a machine
came with. First thing I do is to format C: and re-install.

Of course, this assumes you have a real install DVD, and not just a
"restore" DVD. Worse yet, you may have a restore partition on your drive,
taking up 10 - 20 gigs of space. I always nuke this also, and reclaim the
space.

Yes, Vista is very real, and very nice. I've been running it for nearly 2
years now (on several desktops and laptops), and wouldn't dream (er,
nightmare) of going back to XP.

You don't really need to format and reinstall.
All that OEM "crapware" can be uninstalled. Since most machines have a
restore
disk or partition...a "clean" install from OEM would just put it all back
anyway.

Main thing about Vista is that it really does need 2 gigs of RAM or more to
run right.

One might possibly get by with a gig...
but a number of machines just come with 512 megs...
way too little.

I mainly use Win2k and XP as I refuse to play the H/W upgrade game...
but recently built a dual core cpu machine mostly from spare parts...
so my cost was about $80.

Vista ran OK on it...but I still (at least for now ) prefer XP.

If you had looked around a little, yes you did have options. DELL, for
one, still sells computers with xp and also has several models available
with Linux pre-loaded.

lol, if you think Vista has it's shortcomings, try Linux. Then you can
really appreciate Vista.
The discussion about the so called "OEM crap" contributes very little.
There are few things that the OEM's add that really interfere with the
normal operation (provided you stop everything in the startups that you
don't want there). And you always have the option to slipstream your
custom disk with nLite.

Not really. Vista will USE all of your ram to advantage (unlike XP, where
more than about 1 GB is a waste, because XP will not use it). But I have a
laptop with 1 GB (all it can take) that runs Vista just fine. Yes more
would be nice, but it is NOT necessary.

I have another laptop with 2 GB (Core 2 Duo) and a desktop with 8 GB (Core 2
Quad). Yes, Vista runs better with more ram (as would XP if it wasn't
brain dead!), but 1 GB is enough. No machines come with 512 megs these
days.

FWIW, I personally have installed Vista Business on a 512 meg RAM, 1 Ghz
Pentium 3 machine. The install took forever (over 2 hours, as I recall),
and booting up took a long time before the disk activity stopped, but after
that it ran surprisingly well. I thought it would be completely useless,
but it worked OK.

This was a couple of years ago, when Vista was brand new. This machine was
the only one I had available at the time, and was used for testing our
software on Vista. The testing was a success, BTW - our software runs
fine on Vista.

No, I would definitely NOT want to run Vista every day on such a machine.
But it did install and run, and the machine served its (limited) purpose.

You have documentation of that XP assertion?

Not necessary unless you want it to run as fast as the XP machine you
retired. Then you need twice the CPU and twice the memory for Vista.

Totally irrelevant to practical use. FYI - XP would actually have been
usable.
