How to: Dual use USB drive ---> Read/Write from Computer and Read from "Stand Alone DVD Player"

Vista Home Premium

I have a stand alone DVD player (Phillips DVP5990) that has a USB port for connecting USB HD's or
flash drives. I've tried it with both a 4 gb flash drive and an 80 gb USB HD . . . it works great.

I would like to be able to transfer movies from the computer to the 80 gb drive and watch them on
the DVD player without having to keep disconnecting from one and reconnecting to the other. What is
the best (cheapest) way to connect the 80 gb drive to both the computer and the DVD player
simultaneously.

Thank you,

Don

I don't believe you can do this. You'd need some kind of USB hub with a
switch to move the device from one input to the other as it could never be
connected to both simultaneously. I have never seen such a device.

Do you know if I can go straight from the computer's USB connector to the DVD player's USB
connector. Both are the flat, 5/8" wide female type USB connection.

Thank you,

Don

Not sure if it will work. I do know they make a cable like you describe
though. I have seen them at radio shack. I believe they are used to
transfer documents from one PC to another.

I would tend to doubt it. The PC almost surely does not expose the same
read/write type of surface that a USB flash drive device does. There may be
such a cable/device/software combo out there but I have never seen anything
like it.

Re: How to: Dual use USB drive ---> Read/Write from Computer and Read from "Stand Alone DVD Player"

I've had to write routines to communicate with serial devices (many years ago) but don't have a
clear understanding of what constitutes a USB device vs host. I don't want to get too deep in to
this stuff so I think I'll just buy a USB AA cable and give it a try. There's a local company that
sells a 15' one for $6.95 so there's not much downside. Unfortunately they're closed till Monday.

Thank you for helping

Don
