Emacs Zip File Crashing Vista Explorer

Hi!

I have a new computer with Windows Vista. I wanted to install Emacs from

http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/win...3-bin-i386.zip

and was surprised to find that trying to extract the files of this (rather
large) zip file reliably crashes Windows Explorer.

I tried to report the bug to Microsoft Support but unfortunately they won't
accept any bug reports because I have only an OEM license. (Or if they do
accept bug reports, I couldn't find out how to submit them). If it isn't
just my machine that's broken somehow, there could be a security hole...

Regards,

Re: Emacs Zip File Crashing Vista Explorer

Why don't you try 3rd party zip utlity: '7Zip'

It happens sometimes when extracting big zip files & folders

That's what I did. WinRAR has no problem with the file.

Is AVG on this system?
What's the crash data according to the Problem Reports and Solutions control
panel?

There are two crashes of Windows Explorer in there that are most likely

Re: Emacs Zip File Crashing Vista Explorer

Did you run the "Check for Solutions" option? Both of those are the same
bucket (223052456) and they're already mapped to a resolution. (Read:
uninstall what's causing this.) Does that resolution show up for you?

I'll give you a hint: it's not a coincidence that I guessed that AVG was on
the system. =)

Hmmm, I see. Strange, though, that the crash does not occur when I let
WinRAR unzip the file. Does Vista's unzip code somehow hook into AVG
whereas WinRAR's doesn't? Whatever. If the problem is that common, I
suppose AVG already knows about it. So I guess am going to keep AVG for
the time being :-)

Thank you for your help, anyway!

Re: Emacs Zip File Crashing Vista Explorer

Other way around - AVG might theoretically hook into Explorer. It might be
less interested in WinRAR. =)

I had problems extracting recursive xml source files from libxml2 version
2.7.2 with AVG Free Edition 8 on XP SP3. It said `avgrsx' process was using
100% CPU until I disabled Resident Shield. Then I was able to extract from
the .tar archive.
